                        Standard blue or black ink pens, pencils, highlighter

                        Two (2) 9X12 inch brown mailers for turning in compositions

                        At least three (3) packages of 3X5 inch lined note cards

                        One package of 4X6 lined note cards

                        Brad or pocket folder (turn in to teacher for graded papers)

                        One box of tissues

 

Deadline for supplies is Sept. 4. If purchasing these supplies will create a financial hardship, let me know.  I will be happy to help.

1.            Purchase POISONWOOD BIBLE by Barbara Kingsolver—ISBN 0-06-051282-2 

OR download the book onto your technical device.

2.            Purchase a spiral notebook and separate   into five sections.

As you read, you will record information in the five sections. Label sections with the mother’s name and one section each for the four daughters in the book. You may use bullets instead of complete sentences.  Be thorough as this will prepare you for the test over the book.

3.            Use the attached glossary which will aid you in better understanding the dialogue of the tribe in the book.

You must be prepared to turn in your spiral the first day of school.  No late work will be accepted.

You will also be given a test over the book the first week of school.

aurora borealis Luminous bands or streams of light that are sometimes visible in the night skies of northern regions and are thought to be caused by the ejection of charged particles into the magnetic field of the earth. Also called northern lights.

authenticité (French) Authenticity.

babushka A woman's head scarf, folded triangularly and worn tied under the chin.

bákala mpandi (Kikongo) Good, strong man.

baki (Kikongo) Thief.

bàndika (Kikongo) To kill with an arrow; sex between a husband and wife.

bängala (Kikongo) Poisonwood tree.

sarong A skirt consisting of a length of brightly colored cloth wrapped about the waist that is worn by men and women.

Schistosomiasis Any of various generally tropical diseases caused by infestation with schistosomes, characterized by infection and gradual destruction of the tissues of the kidneys, liver, and other organs. Also called bilharziasis, snail fever.

Why study Psychology?

According to our textbook authors Ciccarelli and White,

“Psychology not only helps you understand why people (and animals) do the things they do, but it also helps you better understand yourself and your reactions to others. Psychology can help you comprehend how your brain and body are connected, how to improve your learning abilities and memory, and how to deal with the stresses of life, both ordinary and extraordinary. In studying psychology, an understanding of the methods psychologists use is crucial because research can be flawed, and knowing how research should be done can bring those flaws to light. And finally, psychology and its research methods promote critical thinking, which can be used to evaluate not just research but also claims of all kinds, including those of advertisers and politicians.”

 

 

Students begin with their summer assignments.  These are due on the first day of class. This will be students’ first major grade.  See attached summer assignment at end of syllabus.

 

Pre-AP Psychology is only taught in the Fall semester and is the prerequisite for AP Psychology which is taught in the Spring semester.

 

Course Overview

The Pre-AP and the AP Psychology Course addresses each of topics in the Course Description content outline. Following the purpose stated in the Course Description, the course “is designed to introduce students to the systematic and scientific study of the behavioral and mental processes of human beings and other animals.  Students are exposed to the psychological facts, principles, and phenomena associated with each of the major subfields within psychology.” In addition, ethical considerations are examined as are the methods psychologists use to explore the processes involved in normal and abnormal perceptions, thoughts, feelings, and actions.

The courses have six objectives:

1.         Students will study the major core concepts and theories of psychology.  Students will be able to define key terms and use these terms in their everyday vocabulary.  Students will be able to compare and contrast the major theories in psychology. Students will develop an understanding of the biological and psychological baes of behavior.

2.         Students will learn the basic skills of psychological research.  Students will be able to devise simple research projects, interpret and generalize from results, and evaluate the general validity of research reports.  Students will be able to recognize the scientific nature of investigation in psychology.

3.         Students will be able to apply psychological concepts to their own lives. Students will be able to recognize psychological principles when they are encountered in everyday situations.

4.         Students will develop critical thinking skills.  Students will become aware of the danger of accepting or rejecting any psychological theory without careful, objective evaluation.

5.         Students will build their reading, writing, and discussion skills.

6.         Students will learn about the ethical standards governing the work of psychologists. Students will maintain high ethical standards and sensitivity in applying the principles of psychology to themselves, other people, and other organisms.

Pre-AP Psychology Summer Assignments 2016

Psychoanalysis, Behaviorism, and Person-Centered Theories are considered the basis of modern psychology.

 

The following assignments are to be turned in on the first day of class.  This will be your first major grade. Please type or hand write all the assignments and place in a brad folder, not a ring binder. Make sure everything you do and write is neat and tidy.

Complete the followings tasks regarding these three theories:

Sigmund Freud and Psychoanalysis   Look up Sigmund Freud and his theory of personality.

 1. Write a synopsis of Freud’s psychosexual stages of development. Include your opinion of this model at the conclusion.

2. Write a synopsis of Freud’s Structural Model. Include your opinion of this model at the conclusion.

3. Write a synopsis of Freud’s Topographical Model. Include your opinion of this model at the conclusion.

Behaviorism Look up Ivan Pavlov and his research with dogs.

1. Write a synopsis of Pavlov’s research with the dogs and how classical conditioning works. Look up John Watson and his experiment with Little Albert.

2. Write a synopsis of Watson’s experiment with Little Albert. Compare and contrast it with Pavlov’s Classical Conditioning. Look up B.F. Skinner and his work with Schedules of Reinforcement.

3. Write a synopsis of B.F. Skinner’s work with the Skinner Box and Schedules of Reinforcement. Person-Centered Theory Look up Carl Rogers.

 4. Write a synopsis of his theory of personality. Include a description of the Actualizing Tendency and Unconditional Positive Regard.

 

Write an essay (Intro, 3 body paragraphs, conclusion) about this topic: “Do We Have Free Will, or is our behavior determined?”

a. Keep in mind, Psychoanalysis believes our behavior is determined by our unconscious processes.

 b. Also, Behaviorists believe our behavior is determined by our environment.

c. Rogers believed we have free will to choose.

d. Include religious perspectives, especially those who see their God or Gods as all-powerful and all-knowing. This would be a determined philosophy with no free-will.

 

 

 To help me get to know you better, you will write What Makes Me, Me. This assignment can be either written or typed. This sounds easy but can prove difficult if you delve deep into your personality and characteristics.

Choose 3 Events (people, places, ideas, etc) that have shaped you into the person you are today. Write an essay entitled What Makes Me, Me. This essay only needs to be 3 paragraphs, one per item. State clearly what the item is and how it has shaped your personality.

 

Using Internet Research

 

Construct a chart outlining these important people in Psychology. You need only to write the person’s name and a sentence or two about that person’s major contribution to the field of psychology. This can be typed or hand-written. Complete sentences are not necessary.
