Student Clubs and Organizations

Beta Club

Beta Club
The Beta Club is a nationally-acclaimed service and academic honor club. Club members participate in fundraisers, serve as peer tutors, participate in community food drives and blood drives, and assist at other school and community functions as they come up. Club members also get to represent THS each year at the state Beta Club convention. Student(s) who wish to participate must maintain at least an 89 average and satisfactory conduct. Meetings are held on an as-needed basis. The club sponsor is Robbin Phelps. National Beta Club

Cheerleaders

Cheerleaders
The THS cheerleaders use their athletic talents to promote school spirit at fall athletic events. Positions in the cheerleading squad are filled yearly through school-wide tryouts. Eligibility to try out is based on a combination of grades, discipline record and ability to meet the financial responsibilities involved. There are 2 squads, Varsity and JV, with 11 positions available on each squad. Practices are held weekly. Students who are interested in trying out to represent your school on the cheerleading squad are required to attend the informational meeting held each spring before tryouts. The THS Varsity and JV cheerleaders are sponsored by Michele Coogler.

Drama Club

Drama Club
The THS Maroon & Gold Players are students who work together to promote the appreciation of educational theater within the district and to expand the development of fine arts activities within the community. Club activities include theater programs, scholarship activities, and community service. The organization is open to any interested THS student and/or parent (or guardian). Meetings are held each Tuesday afternoon at 3:45. The Maroon & Gold Players are sponsored by Roberta Lakavage.

FCA

FCA
FCA is a group of Christian athletes and other Christian students who take the opportunity to meet together for the purpose of fellowship, devotion and spiritual uplifting. The local FCA sponsors an annual Donkeyball game to raise funds in order to attend FCA events like the Rice and University of Houston Fellowship of Christian rallies. FCE also supports Christian events like See You at the Pole. All Christian athletes are invited to join at the national level. Christian students who do not participate in the athletic program are invited to be club members at the local level. Meetings are held on Wednesdays at 7:30 a.m., with an occasional evening meeting on Mondays during the school year. The club sponsors are Tom Bruce and Denise Johnson. FCA

FFA

FFA
FFA is an organization of student seek to explore leadership, career and personal growth opportunities through agricultural education. FFA activities include livestock shows, leadership camps, conventions, and community service activities. Any high school student who pays the organizational dues may be a member. Meetings are held monthly and periodically as needed. FFA is sponsored by David Sheffield. National FFA Organization

HOSA

HOSA
HOSA is a national organization comprised of students who are now or have been enrolled in Health Science classes or plan to pursue a career in health care. HOSA is all about health care and encouraging and training students in preparation for a health professions career. The organization participates in community activities, career day at the middle school, fundraisers for various health related organizations, as well as state and national conventions where they will compete in varied health related events such as medical terminology, emergency preparedness, CPR, etc. HOSA is sponsored by Cheryl Gilbert. International Club

International Club
The International Club is an organization of students seeking both to support each other in language endeavors and to take advantage of cultural activities available in our area. Students who are currently taking a foreign language or who have successfully completed at least one year of a foreign language in the past year are eligible for membership. Each year, club members raise money to attend Houston-area cultural events and to fund the International Club Scholarship for graduating seniors. The club sponsor is Kay Chesson.

Rodeo Club

Rodeo
The Rodeo Club is made up of students who wish to participate in and/or support the activities of the Texas High School Rodeo Association. Student members participate in rodeos and fundraisers. Membership is open to dues-paying high school students. The Rodeo Club meets monthly. It is sponsored by David Sheffield. THSRA

Social Studies

The Social Studies Club

The THS Social Studies Club would love to have you as a member. The goals of the club include providing a platform for learning and discussion regarding the past and present of Tarkington Prairie, Texas, the United States, and the world.

We have fun while expanding our knowledge and understanding of the world. We take Saturday field trips to state historical sites as we try to get a hands-on feel of our history. We strive to see Tarkington students get more actively involved in community organizations that have a historical or non-partisan political purpose. The club participates in and hosts activities that increase student awareness regarding issues important to social studies.

The fundraisers that the club does help Tarkington Prairie through historical site improvement projects and an annual THS Social Studies Scholarship awarded to the senior student majoring in a social studies discipline.

If you are interested in joining the Social Studies Club, we have meetings the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month at 7:30 a.m. in Dalton Gregory's classroom.

Student Council

Student Council
The THS student council is comprised of representatives who are elected by their classmates and officers who are elected by the entire student body. This organization helps develop leadership skills and works to encourage the student body to be active participants in the processes of government. Student council members conduct mock elections, sponsor Red Ribbon Week and attend the annual state convention in Austin. Meetings are held on an as-needed basis.
